I Am an Old Man and Have Known a Great Many Troubles. But Most of Them Have Never Happened.
– Mark Twain
Mark Twain’s words resonate with many of us, don’t they? Life has a funny way of keeping us tangled in our worries, most of which never come to pass. As I reflect on this profound quote, I can’t help but think about how often we squander our precious time fretting over hypothetical troubles. Instead of living in the moment, we let our minds run wild with scenarios that are rarely grounded in reality.
Imagine this: you wake up in the morning, and instead of feeling energized and hopeful, you are bombarded by a slew of “what ifs.” What if I don’t get that promotion? What if I fail at that presentation? What if something goes wrong on my way to an important meeting? It’s exhausting, isn’t it? The truth is, we rarely pause to entertain the idea that things might actually turn out well. Why do we find it easier to dwell on the negative?
Let’s shift gears and embrace a fresh perspective, inspired by the beginning of the Reiki Precepts: Just for today. This simple phrase encourages us to focus on the present moment, allowing ourselves to break free from the chains of worry. I invite you to try something a little out of the ordinary. Take a moment, close your eyes, and place a hand on your heart. Take a deep breath in and imagine that everything you’re working on will work out for the best. Visualize doors opening, opportunities presenting themselves, and joy flowing into your life.
Allow yourself to breathe deeply into this image. Feel the lightness and brightness of these possibilities. Picture them with a smile, and let this positive energy fill you up. Whenever that pesky worry creeps back in—whether it’s later today or tomorrow—take a moment to return to this visualization. Remind yourself that the best outcomes are not only possible but also entirely plausible.
Here’s a little secret from my own life: whenever I find myself running late for an appointment due to unexpected delays—think road closures or traffic jams—I’ve developed a habit that has worked wonders for me. Instead of stewing in anxiety, I envision myself cruising through a series of green traffic lights, arriving on time, and nailing my appointment with ease. It might sound whimsical, but believe it or not, about 98% of the time, this practice helps me arrive on time, feeling composed and ready.
By redirecting my energy into this positive visualization, I’ve found that the external chaos no longer affects my internal peace. My appointments feel more successful, and I show up with a smile instead of stress.
So, my friends, I encourage you to give this a shot. Just for today, let’s choose to focus on the good. Let’s open ourselves up to the idea that life can and does flow in our favor. Imagine the possibilities waiting for you, and let that vision guide your day. I can’t wait to hear how this little exercise impacts your life!
